Beat the traffic! Part two: TMC on test

The Traffic Message Channel runs over the FM radio frequencies and needs a compatible receiver attached to your GPS device (and is seen on devices such as the Garmin nuvi range) in order to be accessed. It delivers results not in real-time but at regular intervals.

The most appealing factor is the fact that it’s free – or at least appears to be free, since if you buy a PND with TMC traffic support the cost of a lifetime subscription to the service will be included. However, the subscription – it should be noted – is not transferable across devices.

Review: Blaupunkt TravelPilot 100

At first glance the TravelPilot 100 does nothing to hide its budget price tag, with a completely square design made from an average quality black plastic. The front is sparse with two volume keys and the on/off button below the 3.5” TFT screen, whilst the back is probably best not looked at.

When you turn the device on, things improve slightly with quick reacting menus and a general speedy system to play with. The actual display is quite dull and not the best in bright conditions, and the menu icons also do little to remove the budget feeling. This theme continues when the navigation screen is loaded up, and despite being quite logically set out, it is hard to get excited by the software implementation on board.
